Description
A panoramic view of Public Square, downtown Wilkes-Barre, PA. Viewpoint: at the Bicentennial Building looking mainly East, with your back to the Susquehanna River, only a couple of streets away. North Main Street starts near the left end of this photo, East Market Street starts near the right (to the left of the highrise).
This was taken early August, after a rainstorm during the weekly farmers market. There is a band-shell in the foreground where varied performances take place, even room for seating or dancing in the sunken area. Local produce is sold around most of the perimeter of the Square, as well as some food vendors.
From the City of Wilkes-Barre website: Wilkes-Barre is an industrial city in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The seat of Luzerne County, the City is located on the Susquehanna River, 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia. According to the 2000 Census, its population was 43,123. Wilkes-Barre was settled in 1769 and during the Revolutionary War was a frontier town burned by the British. The Wyoming Valley Area, where Wilkes-Barre is located, was claimed by both Pennsylvania and Connecticut, which led to the Yankee-Pennamite War. After the U.S. Congress favored Pennsylvania's claim to the region, Connecticut settlers burned Wilkes-Barre for the second time in 1784. The Wyoming Valley held the largest anthracite coal field in the United States.
Its situated in the tri-state area, is only hours away from major cities like New York and Philadelphia. If you prefer nature to the bustle of an urban setting, Wilkes-Barre is a short drive from the beautiful Pocono Mountains with a number of natural park lands.
Luzerne County completed the renovation to the River Common area, located along the Susquehanna River. The project features two portals, which bring views of the river to the street level, an amphitheater for outdoor performances, walking corridors, a boat launch, etc.
History from Wikipedia: The Wyoming Valley was first inhabited by the Shawanese and Delaware Indian tribes in the early 18th century. By 1769, a group led by John Durkee became the first Europeans to reach the area. The settlement was named Wilkes-Barre after John Wilkes and Isaac Barr, two British members of Parliament who supported colonial America.
The initial settlers were aligned with Connecticut, which had a claim on the land that rivaled Pennsylvania's. Armed men loyal to Pennsylvania twice attempted to evict the residents of Wilkes-Barre in what came to be known as the Pennamite Wars. After the American Revolution, the conflict was resolved so that the settlers retained title to their lands but transferred their allegiance to Pennsylvania.
In 1797, several decades after the city's founding, Louis Philippe, later the King of France from 1830 to 1840, stayed in Wilkes-Barre while traveling to the French Asylum settlement.
